BIBLE TEXT: PSALM 27:1–5 (KJV)
1 The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
2 When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell.
3 Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident.
4 One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple.
5 For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock.
EXHORTATION
KEY VERSE:
“The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” — Psalm 27:1 (KJV)
Welcome to a new month and another opportunity to experience God’s faithfulness. Yesterday, in Growth That Leads to Purpose, we considered how spiritual growth prepares us to fulfil God’s purpose through faithful service and obedience. As we begin November, our attention turns to faith, trust, and obedience. One of the greatest tests of our relationship with God comes when life becomes difficult and the answers we desire seem delayed. It is relatively easy to speak about trusting God when everything is going well, but genuine trust is revealed when circumstances challenge our confidence. Today, let us learn to hold on to God even when the journey is difficult.
Corrie ten Boom, a Christian watchmaker from Haarlem in the Netherlands, provides a remarkable example of faith under difficult circumstances. During the Second World War, she and members of her family helped Jewish people escape Nazi persecution by providing shelter in their home. On February 28, 1944, the Gestapo raided their home and arrested Corrie, her father, Casper, her sister Betsie, and other members of the family. Her father died shortly after his arrest, while Corrie and Betsie were eventually sent to Ravensbrück concentration camp in Germany. Despite the suffering they experienced, the sisters continued encouraging fellow prisoners through prayer and Christian fellowship. Betsie died in the camp in December 1944, while Corrie was released later that month. Her experience reminds us that faith does not mean the absence of suffering; it means remaining anchored in God even in the midst of suffering. One important truth we must understand is that trusting God does not mean pretending that everything is fine. It does not mean denying pain, ignoring problems, or refusing to acknowledge our fears. Rather, it means recognising our difficulties while remaining confident in God’s character, power, wisdom, and faithfulness. A person who trusts God can honestly admit that a situation is painful and still believe that the Lord has not abandoned them. Faith does not require us to understand everything before we obey God. It calls us to depend on Him even when we cannot see the complete picture.
David understood this kind of trust. In Psalm 27, he spoke about enemies, opposition, and the possibility of war. He did not write as someone who had never experienced danger. He knew what it meant to face threats and uncertainty. Yet he declared that the Lord was his light, salvation, and strength. His confidence was not based on the absence of enemies but on the presence and power of God. This is an important lesson for every believer: our security is not determined solely by what is happening around us but by the God in whom we have placed our trust.
Sometimes trusting God becomes difficult because we want immediate answers. We pray for a change, but the situation remains the same. We ask for provision, but financial pressure continues. We seek healing, but recovery takes longer than expected. We desire peace in our families, but misunderstandings persist. In such moments, it is easy to become discouraged or conclude that God is not listening. However, delay does not necessarily mean denial, and silence does not mean absence. God’s timing and methods may differ from our expectations, but His character remains faithful.
Consider Abraham, who received God’s promise that he would become the father of many nations. Yet years passed before the promised son, Isaac, was born. The waiting period tested his faith, and there were moments when he struggled to understand how God’s promise would be fulfilled. Nevertheless, God remained faithful to His word (Genesis 15:1–6; 21:1–3). His experience teaches us that waiting can be difficult, but we must not allow impatience to lead us into decisions that contradict God’s instructions. Trust requires us to remain obedient while we wait.
Trusting God when it is hard also means refusing to allow fear to control our decisions. Fear may tell us to abandon what is right, compromise our convictions, or take dishonest shortcuts to escape pressure. It may encourage us to depend entirely on human strength and forget the One who holds our lives. But Proverbs 3:5–6 reminds us to trust in the LORD with all our heart and acknowledge Him in all our ways. This does not mean we should avoid planning, seeking advice, or taking responsible action. Rather, we should make our plans prayerfully, seek godly counsel, and refuse to act contrary to God’s Word simply because we are under pressure.
Furthermore, trusting God does not guarantee that every difficult situation will end exactly as we desire. Some prayers may receive different answers from what we expect. Some seasons may require endurance rather than immediate deliverance. Some losses may leave painful memories. Yet God remains worthy of our trust because He is faithful, wise, and loving. Romans 8:28 assures believers that God works all things together for good to those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. This does not mean every experience is good in itself, but that no circumstance is beyond His ability to work for His purpose.
Beloved, whatever you are facing as this new month begins, do not surrender your confidence in God. If you are experiencing financial pressure, seek His wisdom and remain responsible. If you are facing family challenges, continue to pray and do what is right. If your health, ministry, work, or future seems uncertain, place your concerns before Him. Do not allow a difficult season to destroy the faith you have built through previous experiences of His goodness. Remember how He has helped you, and let those testimonies strengthen your confidence for today.
As we journey through November, let our faith become stronger than our fears. We may not know everything this month will bring, but we know the One who goes before us. Keep praying, keep obeying, keep trusting, and keep doing what is right. The Lord who has sustained you until today is able to strengthen you for the challenges ahead. Let your confidence rest not in the ease of your circumstances but in the unchanging faithfulness of your God.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Trust is not proven only when God gives us what we desire; it is also revealed when we continue to believe and obey Him while waiting for His answer.
