YOU BELONG TO GOD – MAY 16th MEDITATION

Bible Passage (KJV): 1 Peter 2:9–12

  1. But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
  2. Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.
  3. Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;
  4. Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.

EXHORTATION

Welcome to Mercy Speaking Devotional. Today is Saturday, May 16, 2026. Saturday often gives many people a little space to reflect after the pressures of the week. For some, it is a day of rest; for others, it is a day of catching up with unfinished duties. But beyond rest and activity, today God is calling you to remember something deeper: you are not an abandoned soul trying to survive in this world—you belong to God.

In London, United Kingdom, a young woman named Ashley John-Baptiste became known for his powerful life story after growing up in the foster care system. Born in London and raised without the stability of a permanent family home, he moved through different placements and faced the deep emotional struggle of identity, rejection, and belonging. For many children in such situations, the question is not merely, “Where do I live?” but “Who claims me? Who sees me? Where do I truly belong?”

Ashley later became a journalist and broadcaster, using his voice to highlight the experiences of children in care and those who feel forgotten by society. His story reminds us that one of the deepest needs of the human heart is the need to belong. People can survive many hardships, but when a person feels unwanted, unclaimed, and unseen, the soul becomes wounded.

This is why today’s Scripture is so powerful. Peter writes to believers who were scattered, misunderstood, and treated like strangers in the world. Yet he does not define them by their social condition. He defines them by God’s declaration. He says they are “a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people.” In other words, they may have been rejected by society, but they were claimed by God.

To belong to God means your identity is no longer determined by rejection, background, failure, family history, public opinion, or past mistakes. You are not merely someone trying to find meaning; you are someone God has called out of darkness into His marvellous light.

Verse 10 says, “Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God.” That is mercy speaking. There was a time when we were outside covenant, outside hope, and outside the life of God. But through Christ, mercy brought us near. We who had not obtained mercy have now obtained mercy. We who were spiritually displaced have now been given a home in God.

This truth is especially important in a world where many people are struggling with identity. Some try to belong through popularity. Some through relationships. Some through achievements, money, titles, appearance, or social approval. But anything that can change cannot be the foundation of your identity. People may accept you today and reject you tomorrow. Success may rise and fall. Human applause may be loud today and silent tomorrow. But God’s ownership is secure.

When God says you belong to Him, He is not making a temporary emotional statement. He is declaring covenant ownership. Isaiah 43:1 says, “Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine.” Those three words—“thou art mine”—carry deep comfort. They mean you are known, redeemed, protected, loved, and claimed.

However, belonging to God also carries responsibility. Peter says that because we are God’s people, we must abstain from sinful desires that war against the soul and live honourably before others. Grace does not only give us a new identity; it calls us into a new lifestyle. If you belong to God, your life should increasingly reflect His character.

This means you cannot live carelessly and still claim divine ownership without surrender. A child of God must learn to walk differently, speak differently, choose differently, and respond differently. Not because we are trying to earn God’s love, but because we already belong to Him.

You may have been rejected by people, but you are accepted in Christ. You may have been overlooked by family, but you are chosen by God. You may have felt like an outsider, but mercy has brought you into the household of faith. Ephesians 2:19 says believers are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God.

Today, let this truth settle deeply in your heart: you belong to God. Not because you are perfect, but because He has redeemed you. Not because people approve of you, but because Christ has purchased you. Not because you have never failed, but because mercy has claimed you.

So walk today with confidence, humility, and gratitude. You are chosen. You are loved. You are covered. You are God’s own.

Food for Thought

If God has called you His own, why should rejection, failure, or human opinion have the power to define your identity?

Prayer Points

  1. Father, thank You for choosing me, redeeming me, and calling me Your own through Your mercy.

  4. Lord, separate me from every habit, desire, and lifestyle that contradicts my identity in You.
