WHEN GOD IS BUILDING YOUR FAITH: OCTOBER 25, 2026 DEVOTIONAL

BIBLE TEXT: JAMES 1:2–8 (KJV)

2 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;

3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.

4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.

5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.

7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.

8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

EXHORTATION

KEY VERSE:

“Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.” — James 1:3 (KJV)

Welcome to Mercy Speaking Daily Devotional on this Sunday, October 25, 2026. It’s been a while. We stopped on the 16th of this month because we’re moving the website to a new host. So we apologise for any inconvenience. Today, we consider When God Is Building Your Faith. A deeply rooted Christian is not someone who never encounters difficulties, but someone who learns to depend on God through them. There are seasons when our faith is strengthened through answered prayers, and there are other seasons when we must trust God without immediately seeing the outcome. In both situations, the Lord calls us to grow in our knowledge of Him and remain faithful.

The life of James Hudson Taylor, a British missionary who served in China, provides an example of faith expressed through perseverance. After returning to England in 1860 because of ill health, Taylor remained burdened for people in China’s inland provinces who had little access to the Christian message. On June 25, 1865, he founded the China Inland Mission, despite having limited financial resources for the work he envisioned. The mission began sending workers to China in 1866 and grew into an extensive missionary movement. Taylor’s work involved uncertainty, demanding responsibilities and personal suffering, yet he continued pursuing the mission he believed God had placed before him. His story is documented by OMF International, the successor organisation to the China Inland Mission. His life reminds us that faith is not merely an expression of confidence; it must also be demonstrated through prayer, preparation, perseverance and faithful action.

James begins this passage with a challenging instruction: believers should count it all joy when they encounter various trials. This does not mean that Christians must pretend to enjoy pain, celebrate injustice or deny the reality of grief. The Bible does not teach us to become insensitive to suffering. Rather, James calls us to look beyond the immediate difficulty and recognise what God can produce in us as we respond to Him faithfully. Our joy is not necessarily in the trial itself, but in the assurance that hardship does not have to be wasted and that our relationship with God can remain secure even when circumstances change.

Verse 3 explains that the testing of our faith produces patience. Faith that has never been tested may remain largely unexamined. When everything goes according to our expectations, it can be easy to say that we trust God. But what happens when an answer is delayed, a plan fails, a door closes or a situation becomes more difficult than we anticipated? Such experiences reveal where we have placed our confidence. They can expose fear, impatience and dependence on our own understanding. When we turn to God instead of abandoning our faith, we learn to endure without allowing disappointment to determine our response.

We must remember that a trial does not automatically make every person stronger. Some people become bitter, while others withdraw from God because they cannot understand what is happening. The important question is how we respond. We can bring our questions honestly before the Lord, search the Scriptures for guidance, seek wise counsel and continue doing what is right. We can also ask for practical help when circumstances require it. Faith does not prevent us from acknowledging our needs; it teaches us to face them without making our difficulties greater than God’s ability to sustain us.

James 1:4 encourages us to allow patience to complete its work so that we may become mature and complete. This reminds us that spiritual growth takes time. God may be developing qualities in us that cannot be acquired through comfort alone. Patience may grow as we wait without becoming resentful. Courage may develop as we continue doing what is right despite opposition. Humility may deepen when we recognise our limitations and seek help. Compassion may increase when our own experiences teach us to understand the pain of others. These changes are not automatic, but they become possible when we remain responsive to God’s truth.

Sometimes we pray for God to change our circumstances while overlooking the attitudes He wants us to examine. We ask for success but resist discipline. We desire greater responsibility but struggle to remain faithful in small duties. We ask for peace but continue to feed anger and resentment. Building our faith involves trusting God for His help while also allowing His Word to correct our choices. We must not assume that every difficulty has a hidden message we can immediately identify. Nevertheless, every season gives us an opportunity to seek God’s wisdom and respond in ways that honour Him.

In verse 5, James tells believers who lack wisdom to ask God, who gives generously. This is an important reminder because trials often bring confusion. We may not know whether to wait, take action, seek assistance or change our approach. God invites us to seek His wisdom rather than allowing fear to control our decisions. We can pray, examine the principles of Scripture, consider the facts honestly and consult trustworthy, godly people. Faith does not mean refusing to think carefully; it means seeking God’s direction and trusting Him as we take responsible steps.

James also warns against being double-minded and unstable. This does not mean that a sincere Christian will never experience doubt, ask questions or struggle emotionally. The Psalms contain honest cries of distress, and faithful believers sometimes wrestle with uncertainty. The warning is against a divided commitment that continually shifts between trusting God and rejecting His direction according to convenience. Mature faith may have questions, but it keeps turning towards God. It does not require us to understand every detail before obeying what His Word has already made clear.

Beloved, if you are passing through a season that is testing your faith, do not conclude that God has abandoned you simply because the way is difficult. Continue to pray, remain grounded in Scripture and take the next faithful step. If you are grieving, allow yourself to seek comfort. If you need assistance, ask for it. If you have made a mistake, repent and begin again. If the answer you desire has not come, resist the temptation to assume that delay means rejection. We may not understand everything God permits, but we can continue to seek His wisdom and trust His character.

When God is building your faith, the goal is not merely to help you survive a difficult season; it is to help you become more steadfast, wise and mature in your walk with Christ. Let today’s challenges draw you towards God rather than away from Him. Keep your confidence in the Lord, practise what His Word teaches and remember that genuine faith can remain firm even when circumstances have not yet changed.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Faith grows stronger when we continue to trust and obey God, even before we see how our circumstances will unfold.
