Bible Passage (KJV): 2 Corinthians 12:7–10
- And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure.
- For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.
- And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
- Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.
EXHORTATION
Welcome to Mercy Speaking Devotional, and welcome to this Friday, May 22, 2026. As another week comes to a close, many people are quietly battling feelings of inadequacy. Some feel they are not intelligent enough, strong enough, spiritual enough, talented enough, or worthy enough. Others are painfully aware of personal weaknesses, past mistakes, limitations, or flaws they wish they could erase. Yet today, God speaks a comforting truth to every imperfect heart: He sees beyond your flaws.
In Melbourne, Australia, a man named Nick Vujicic was born in 1982 without arms and legs because of a rare condition called tetra-amelia syndrome. Growing up, Nick faced severe emotional struggles, bullying, rejection, and deep questions about his worth and purpose. At one point during his childhood, he battled hopelessness and wondered if his life could ever have meaning.
Humanly speaking, many would have looked at Nick and only seen limitations. But over time, through faith in Christ, encouragement from family, and personal perseverance, he discovered that his value was not determined by physical appearance or ability. Nick eventually became an internationally known Christian speaker, author, and encourager, sharing messages of hope, faith, and purpose across many nations. What some people considered a flaw became part of a testimony that has strengthened millions of lives.
Nick’s story reflects a powerful spiritual reality: God does not evaluate people the way humans often do. People tend to focus on weakness, appearance, failure, and limitation, but God looks deeper. He sees destiny where others see defects. He sees grace where others see inadequacy. He sees purpose where others see brokenness.
This is the lesson Paul learned in 2 Corinthians 12. Paul spoke about a “thorn in the flesh,” something painful and difficult that he asked God repeatedly to remove. Scripture does not fully define the thorn, but we know it represented weakness, limitation, and ongoing struggle. Paul wanted deliverance, but God answered differently than he expected.
Instead of removing the weakness immediately, God said, “My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.”
That statement changes how we understand weakness. In a world that celebrates perfection, self-sufficiency, and outward strength, God reveals that His power often shines brightest through surrendered weakness. Weakness does not automatically disqualify you from being used by God. In fact, when surrendered to Him, weakness can become the stage upon which His grace is displayed.
Many people spend their lives hiding flaws. Some hide emotional wounds. Some hide insecurity. Some hide past failures. Some pretend to be strong because they fear rejection if people discover their struggles. But God already sees everything—and He still loves, calls, and uses imperfect people.
Moses struggled with speech, yet God used him to confront Pharaoh. Gideon struggled with fear, yet God used him to deliver Israel. Rahab had a shameful past, yet she became part of the lineage of Christ. Peter was impulsive and unstable at times, yet Jesus made him a pillar in the early church.
God has never depended on flawless people. He works through surrendered people.
This does not mean flaws should be celebrated carelessly or that growth is unnecessary. Grace is not permission to remain spiritually immature or irresponsible. God still calls us to holiness, growth, discipline, and transformation. But transformation begins with surrender, not self-hatred. You cannot heal properly while despising yourself constantly.
Paul eventually reached a place where he stopped viewing weakness only as an embarrassment. He began to see it as a place where the power of Christ could rest upon him. That is a mature spiritual perspective. Instead of saying, “God cannot use me because I am weak,” Paul learned to say, “God’s strength becomes visible when I depend on Him.”
Today, many believers are waiting to become “perfect enough” before they fully obey God, serve others, share their testimony, or pursue purpose. But if God only used flawless people, nobody would qualify.
The truth is this: God already knows your flaws, your fears, your scars, your limitations, and your struggles—and He still calls you His own. His grace does not ignore weakness; it works through surrendered weakness.
So stop measuring your worth only by what is missing. Stop defining yourself by the areas where you struggle. Stop allowing insecurity to silence the purpose of God in your life.
You may have flaws, but you are still loved.
You may have weaknesses, but you are still chosen.
You may have scars, but you are still valuable.
You may feel inadequate, but God’s grace is still sufficient.
This Friday, bring your weaknesses honestly before God. Let His grace cover what you cannot fix by yourself. Let His strength sustain you where you feel inadequate. And let His mercy remind you that He sees beyond your flaws into the person He is shaping you to become.
Food for Thought
If God already knows your weaknesses and still chooses to love, call, and use you, why should your flaws become greater in your mind than His grace?
