THE GIFT OF A FRESH START – MAY 9th MEDITATION

Bible Passage (NKJV): Isaiah 43:18–21

  1. “Do not remember the former things, nor consider the things of old.
  2. Behold, I will do a new thing, now it shall spring forth; shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.
  3. The beast of the field will honor Me, the jackals and the ostriches, because I give waters in the wilderness and rivers in the desert, to give drink to My people, My chosen.
  4. This people I have formed for Myself; they shall declare My praise.”

EXHORTATION

Welcome to Mercy Speaking Devotional. Today is Saturday, and it is the day (and weekend) that God has made for us to rejoice and be glad in it. God is also reminding us that no matter how difficult the week has been, God still specialises in new beginnings.

In Los Angeles, California, USA, a woman named Susan Burton experienced years of addiction, incarceration, and repeated personal failures after the tragic loss of her young son in the 1980s. Grief drove her into destructive habits that eventually led to multiple arrests and imprisonment. By the time she was released again in the 1990s, many people had already concluded that her life would never change.

But Susan encountered people who showed her compassion instead of condemnation. Through faith, support, and determination, she slowly rebuilt her life. Eventually, she founded an organisation called A New Way of Life, helping formerly incarcerated women reintegrate into society. Thousands of women have since found hope and restoration through her work.

Susan’s story is powerful because it reminds us that a painful past does not cancel the possibility of a new future.

This is exactly what God declares in Isaiah 43. Israel had experienced failure, captivity, and consequences for disobedience. Yet God spoke hope into their hopelessness: “Behold, I will do a new thing.”

Notice that God first said, “Do not remember the former things.” Many people cannot move into the new thing God is doing because they remain emotionally trapped in old failures, regrets, disappointments, or wounds. They constantly replay what went wrong.

But God is not asking you to live backwards. He is calling you forward.

A fresh start is one of God’s greatest gifts. Throughout Scripture, we see Him giving people another chance. Jonah ran from God, yet God restored his assignment. Peter denied Jesus, yet Jesus recommissioned him. The prodigal son wasted everything, yet the father welcomed him home.

God’s mercy creates opportunities that human judgment often denies.

However, a fresh start does not mean pretending the past never happened. It means refusing to allow the past to imprison your future. Paul declared in Philippians 3:13 that he was “forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead.”

Sometimes, the hardest person to convince that change is possible is yourself. Others may eventually move on, but inwardly you may still carry shame and fear. You may wonder whether you truly deserve another opportunity.

The truth is: none of us earns grace, so none deserves a second chance because a fresh start is not a reward for perfection; it is a gift of mercy.

Isaiah 43:19 says God makes roads in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. That means He creates possibilities where none seem to exist. What looks barren to you is not barren to God. He can bring life out of dry places, hope out of despair, and restoration out of ruin.

Today, stop speaking as though your story has ended. As long as God is alive, new beginnings are possible. Your past may explain you, but it does not own you.

Maybe you failed spiritually. Maybe you made poor decisions. Maybe you lost years in regret or wandered far from God. Yet His mercy still calls you forward.

Do not remain stuck in yesterday’s pain when God is preparing tomorrow’s testimony.

This Saturday, receive the gift of a fresh start. Step out of guilt. Step out of fear. Step out of condemnation.

The God who makes rivers in the desert is still able to make a new way for you.

Food for Thought

If God is willing to give you a fresh start, why are you still allowing your past to define your future? The God who makes rivers in the desert can still create a new path for your life.

Prayer Points

  1. Father, I thank You for the gift of mercy and the opportunity for a fresh start.
  2. Lord, help me to let go of every regret, shame, and failure from my past.
  3. Father, create new opportunities and new beginnings in every dry area of my life.
  4. I reject every voice of condemnation and hopelessness, in Jesus’ name.
  5. Lord, let my life become a testimony of restoration, transformation, and renewed purpose.
